SUSTAINABILITY SUPERSTAR R ESUM E THE SHED DISTILLERY OF PJ RIGNEY Making the Ordinary Extraordinary in Drumshanbo, Ireland CERTIFICATIONS SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES Origin Green certified since 2017 Distillery runs on 100% green-sourced (solar and wind) electricity. COMMUNITY OUTREACH Has created over 100 jobs in the Drumshanbo community — including hiring 15 Ukrainian refugees. In 2023, The Shed established an 80-acre nature reserve, along with 100 acres of commonage for livestock, which is shared with two dozen local farmers. Supporter of Tidy Towns, an annual competition organized by Ireland’s Department of Rural and Community Development. Creating a community center by renovating the former local Methodist Church, which was on the verge of dereliction. Member of Repak, a non-profit organization that helps Irish businesses recycle their packaging. Member fees fund household recycling bins, bottle banks, civic amenities, and business back-door packaging recycling in communities across Ireland. In the nature reserve, the team has planted 150 native Irish hedgerows and wildflowers, is restoring the old stone cottages on the land, and has created a bee haven with six hives. Uses locally and nationally sourced ingredients wherever possible — nettles and meadowsweet are foraged from Drumshanbo fields, while barley and oats come from the Midlands and Southeast of Ireland.
