Given their historic significance, Fontanafredda is the only producer in Barolo whose entire estate is demarcated an MGA (additional geographic mention. They were the first winery to bottle and sell a single commune-designated Barolo, their Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG, as well as produce the first single vineyard-designated Barolo, Vigna La Rosa Barolo DOCG. Barolo Royalty King Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of unified Italy, purchased Fontanafredda in 1858. His son, Emanuele Alberto, Count of Mirafiori, grew the reputation of Barolo at royal courts abroad. 1964 - first winery to produce a single vineyard-designated Barolo, Vigna La Rosa Barolo DOCG 1988 - first to produce a commune-designated Barolo with their Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG Under visionary entrepreneur, Oscar Farinetti, Fontanafredda’s portfolio has since grown to express the depth and diversity of the Langhe, produced from sustainably managed vineyards.
